Ramathra Fort, Dist. Karauli (Rajasthan)

Situated on a hilltop, Ramathra Fort offers spectacular views of the Kalisil Lake, surrounding hills and countryside. Small rural hamlets dot the picturesque farmland below. Water birds abound the lake which is also a rich feeding ground for the ducks, storks including cormorants that visit every winter. Birds such as local waterfowl, kingfishers, sarus cranes, stilt and herons can be seen throughout the year.

Ramathra Fort is located at Karauli district of Rajasthan and it lies between the two most famous wildlife sanctuaries namely the Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur and Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Sawai Madhopur however the most closest national park to the Fort is Kaila Devi National Park which is just 15 kms away. The fort has a strong perimeter wall crowned with parapets. Its ramparts are wide and offer a spectacular view from the hilltop. After all, it was designed to be a battle fort.

Kaila Devi National Park is the expansion of the Ranthambore National Park. It has Banas River in the westside and Chambal River to the southeast. The national park is named after the Keladevi temple which attracts a lot of devotees and visitors. The usually sighted animals are sambar deers, wolves, hyenas, blue bulls, jackals, chinkaras and if lucky a wild boar, sloth bear or leopard.

Ramathra was granted as a jagir (fiefdom) in 1645 AD to Thakur Bhoj Pal by his father who the Maharaja of Karauli. The name Ramathra honours Lord Rama, who, it is believed to have camped here while on his epic journey to Sri Lanka. Today, Ramathra Fort belongs to Thakur Brijendra Raj Pal and his family who are descendants of the founder.

The Fort is almost 350 years old and inside the Fort, is a multistoried palace, which has been partially restored using traditional building techniques, local materials, local artisans and workmen and also ensuring that they are in line with the local traditional style.

The Fort has a total of 12 guest rooms out of which 6 of them are beautifully designed Luxury Tents setup inside the fort against the rampart walls. A courtyard style garden in central and serves as comfortable sitting area for guests. The rest of the 6 rooms are divided among 2 categories namely the Deluxe Room (4) and the Luxury Suite (2).
